The next big smartphone for 2017 to take on the Galaxy S8 might be the upcoming OnePlus 5T. A high-end phone with an affordable price tag. At least according to recent reports and rumors. With that in mind, here’s what we know about the OnePlus 5T, the successor to the original OnePlus 5.

Back in June, the OnePlus 5 hit store shelves. Offering an experience like flagship phones but at a lower price point. It had one thing missing though, a bezel-free display like the LG V30, Pixel 2 XL or Galaxy S8.

However, over the past few weeks, tons of leaks have emerged suggesting a new and improved OnePlus 5T will get released in November. Adding key upgrades to the original similar to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T in 2016. If the Pixel 2 XL display problems have you looking elsewhere, this could be a great alternative.

While nothing is confirmed, countless leaks from reliable sources believe a new and improved 6-inch OnePlus 5T will get announced in early November. Here’s what we’re hearing so far.

OnePlus 5T Release Date Rumors

The company hasn’t confirmed a new phone is coming or even sent out invites to a press event. Typically we have a good idea about a device long before it arrives. That isn’t the case here. Instead, a few leaks surfaced, then the news exploded.

From reports out of China, popular leasksters like @Evleaks on Twitter, and more. Everything points to the OnePlus 5T launch event around November 14-16th, with a November 20th release date. While discussing these reports, this is what Evan Blass had to say.

Last year the company did something similar. Adding key upgrades to the OnePlus 3 like a better camera, faster processor, and a bigger battery, then released it on November 15th. If a new and improved phone is coming, we’ll get an official announcement soon. Stay tuned for more details.

OnePlus 5T Display

The biggest change we’re seeing from leaks of the OnePlus 5T is the display. Instead of once again offering a 5.5-inch 1080p display, the company can finally compete with Samsung and LG. Leaked photos and video show a device with a 6-inch tall and skinny screen. Similar to the LG V30 or Google Pixel 2 XL.

Most likely potential buyers can expect a 6-inch LED display that’s tall and skinny. Basically a 2:1 aspect ratio like the Galaxy S8. We’re hearing this new screen is 2160 x 1080p, so still not a Quad-HD panel.

This updated design puts the OnePlus 5T on par with other popular Android smartphones on the market. One thing to keep in mind is there’s now no room on the front for a fingerprint scanner. Early leaks indicate the company put it on the back, under the camera, just like most manufacturers.

Now, potential buyers just need to wait and see what other upgrades the 5T has to offer.

OnePlus 5T Specs & Features

Aside from the bigger 6-inch screen and new aspect ratio, the OnePlus 5T might have specs and features similar to its predecessor. There are a few notable changes though, and here’s what we’re hearing so far.

OnePlus 5T Specs (Rumored)

  • 6-inch 2180 x 1080p HD Edge-to-Edge Display

  • Snapdragon 835 Processor with 6 or 8GB of RAM

  • 64 or 128GB of storage with no microSD slot

  • Improved Dual 20 Megapixel Rear cameras with f/1.6 aperture main, f/2.4 secondary

  • 16 Megapixel Front-facing camera

  • Android 7.0 Nougat or Android 8.0 Oreo

  • Rear fingerprint scanner

  • 3,450 mAh battery with Dash Fast Charging

  • Single bottom-firing speaker

  • more

Last year the OnePlus 3T had upgrades across the board. However, for the new OnePlus 5T it looks like the main changes are the screen and camera. That said, those are two important factors for most buyers. We’re unsure if the second camera takes portrait photos like Samsung or Apple, or takes wide-angle shots like the LG V30.

OnePlus 5T Price

The last thing we need to talk about is pricing and availability. OnePlus is known for great phones at an affordable price, but every launch over the past few years we’ve seen that price increase.

With a big new screen and better cameras, along with potentially the option for water-resistance, we expect a price increase. Hopefully we’ll know more in the coming days or weeks, but it’s safe to assume the OnePlus 5T will cost somewhere around $499 for 64GB, and $559 or more for the 128GB model with 8GB of RAM.

Either way, this is shaping up nicely and could give the Galaxy S8, iPhone X, and others a run for their money. We’ll report back as soon as we know more.
