The smartwatch market has been slowly losing momentum, but that should all change early next year. This week Google confirmed the company is working hard on two high-end flagship Android Wear smartwatches, which will debut in early 2017. Here’s what we know so far.

Since being released in 2014 Android Wear smartwatches have been few and far in-between. The Moto 360 was successful, but that’s about it. Most manufacturers decided to skip 2016 completely, and there are no new products for consumers. At least not right now.

However, for months on end we’ve been hearing rumors that Google themselves are building a pair of premium watches. Today Google confirmed exactly that, although they won’t be branded as Pixel or Nexus devices. Read on for more details.

According to The Verge, who hosted an interview with Android Wear manager and Google employee Jeff Chang, big things are coming. During the interview Jeff had a lot to say about Android Wear, smartwatches as a whole, and where things are headed.

It looks like rumors back in July of 2016 were right. However, Google is actually working hard with a partner on two premium smartwatches. Not building some themselves. We’re assuming one will be bigger than the other, with more features, but nothing is confirmed at this point. This is based on earlier rumors.

Google’s employee went on to say these won’t be “Pixel or Nexus” branded watches. Instead, they are coming from a well-known company who has released Android Wear watches in the past. Our bet is on Motorola, but anything is possible at this point.

Furthermore, these two high-end watches will be the first to run on the new and improved Android Wear 2.0 software update. Bringing loads of improvements to wearables and our wrist. Additionally, both will support Android Pay for mobile payments, along with the Google Assistant.

All said and done we still don’t know too much about Google or their mystery partner. However, it looks like within the first few months of 2017 consumers will have two top of the line Android watches to choose from. This is good news considering the lack of options as the year comes to a close. Following the release of these two new watches, Android Wear 2.0 will arrive as an update to other eligible devices. Stay tuned for more details.
